What Is Temperature Excursion?
A temperature excursion is an event in which a product leaves its required storage temperature range. Under GDP and HACCP frameworks in the cold chain, excursion logging is mandatory; whether the product is temporarily or permanently lost is judged by the excursion's duration, direction and the product's tolerance curve.
How Does Temperature Excursion Work?
When an excursion is detected, the product is placed into immediate quarantine; the time-temperature data is evaluated against the manufacturer's monograph. Some products tolerate brief mild excursions (Mean Kinetic Temperature approach); others must be discarded on a single excursion (certain vaccines). The decision depends on recorded data — without records, the product is assumed lost.
