What Is Soil Moisture Sensor?
A soil moisture sensor is an IoT sensor that measures the water content of soil and is a fundamental component of smart irrigation systems. It performs precise moisture measurement using capacitive or TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) technology.
How Does Soil Moisture Sensor Work?
Capacitive soil moisture sensors determine moisture levels by measuring the dielectric constant of soil. Since water, soil, and air have different dielectric constants, the sensor's capacitance changes as moisture varies. TDR sensors calculate moisture by measuring the propagation speed of electromagnetic waves in soil. Data is transmitted to the central system via LoRaWAN or wired connection.
